Opening Day 2021
The smell of freshly cut grass fills the air. Each blade cut to the exact same length, as if it was done by hand with scissors. The infield dirt raked so smooth it looks like glass. The white chalk lines painted perfectly straight from home plate to the foul poles. As the home team runs onto the field, the players jumping over the chalk, because it’s bad luck to walk on them, the home crowd with rise to their feet and roar. The problem with that picture is that only one ballpark with be filled to capacity, Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX, home of the Texas Rangers. That’s the only ballpark where you will hear a natural crowd roar. The other parks across the country will most likely have a synthetic roar piped into the sound system. On April 1, 2021 MLB baseball will start its 119th season with all 30 of its teams in action, but only in Texas will it feel like it should be. At least there will be baseball and in a way that’s all that matters.
